Family Healthy News
May-October 2001 Medical Office Newsletter

Making vacation arrangements?  That's good!  Here are a few guidelines to help make your vacation away from home as illness or disease-free as possible:

If you become sick, even if it's 12-months passed, after your return from a trip especially abroad, we will want to know what areas you have visited.

Bon Voyage!
Suite618.org
The office of Vanessa H. Fidele, MD, FAAP
Call us at least 6-weeks before your trip for immunizations &/or recommendations especially if traveling outside of the U.S.  Dr. Fidele can inform you of any outbreaks & suggested vaccinations.

Wash hands frequently with soap and water.  Hand wipes or antiseptic towelettes are convenient and take up little space. These wipes can be tucked in your fanny pack, purse or child's backpack as an immediate substitute for soap and water.

Make sure dairy and juice products are
pasteurized
.  Pasteurized products decreases the chances of food-borne illnesses.

Foods should be cooked thoroughly.  This is especially true for ground beef, poultry and pork.

Avoid raw shellfish or seafood.

Eat and feed your child only fruits and vegetables you have washed and peeled yourself.  For your family's sake:  Boil it, cook it, peel it or forget it.

If you are in an underdeveloped area, drink only bottled, boiled or carbonated drinks in bottles.  Make sure the seal has not been broken.  This means no tap water or ice cubes.  Keep away from fountain drinks.  If this is unrealistic in the region you are in, make sure you make safe drinking water by the preferred method of boiling the water (preferred as compared to the next method due to the risk of iodine for pregnant moms) OR  by doing both of the following:  a)  filter water through an "absolute 1-micron or less" filter and b)  add iodine tablets to the filtered water.  You can find these products at Sears and any camping/outdoor supply stores.

Take along insect repellent containing DEET (diethylmethyltoluamide) 30-35% for adults; 6-10% for children.  Make sure you test for possible adverse reactions by applying to a small area of skin first before lavishing all over the body.  Don't put on baby's fingers since they have a tendency to put fingers in their mouths.  Cover Baby's hands.  Take care not to ingest or inhale repellent.  Bathe child once back indoors.

Bring along sunglasses and sun block.  Dr. Fidele recommends sun block of SPF 30 and greater.

Wear covered shoes and keep feet clean and dry to prevent fungal and/or parasitic infections.

Prescription medications should be enough to last the duration of your trip plus a week supply in case of prolonged travel delays.  Have a copy of your prescription(s) on your possession.  Carry your medications with you and preferably in its original container.

Refrain from reaching out to or handling any animals.  Rabies is nonexistent in Hawaii.  Outside of Hawaii is a different story.

If swimming is on the agenda, swim in well chlorinated swimming pools or salt water.  Be cautious of fresh water ponds, rivers, lakes.  Look for, read and heed posted warnings.
Prepare a Travel/Medical Kit
Whether you plan to simply go to the neighbor islands, travel out of Hawaii or vacation abroad, a Travel/Medical Kit can be the next best thing to taking Dr. Fidele and the office (really, we wouldn't mind!)

A Happy Flight with Kids
A plane ride with kids need not be a traumatic experience.  Plan in advance and talk to your kids on what to expect and what's expected of them (e.g., stay close, quiet voice is required on the plane and to remain seated as opposed to standing / jumping on seat).  Be sure to check with your airlines on carry on/packing guidelines.
