Calcium Family Healthy News Vanessa H. Fidele, MD, FAAP
Adequate calcium intake (along with exercise!) is important for optimal bone mass. Not only does this help prevent osteoporosis but may also help in lowering fractures in children/adolescents. Bioavailability of calcium is not the same in all sources. For example: 1/2-cup of spinach has 120-mg but most of the calcium from spinach is not absorbed by the human body. What this means is Popeye was not getting his calcium needs from spinach! Nuts and seeds also fall in this category and are not good sources of calcium.
How much calcium do you need to make sure you have strong, healthy bones as you get bigger and older? To be able to run hard to catch that football, make a homerun, hit a hole in one or even fly like a professional gymnast, you'll need good, strong, solid bones! You will want to exercise regularly and get your daily calcium needs.
The lists below should help answer some of your questions. The following recommendations are based on a healthy normal person consuming a regular diet. Patients with certain medical conditions may have different requirements and should follow your doctor's advice.
How much calcium do I need?
Do I have to take a pill? No. You can get your daily calcium needs by eating good healthy foods in moderation. Listed below are some foods that are good sources of calcium.
*The actual amount listed below may vary depending on product/brand. |
