BITES -n- STINGS Family Healthy News Vanessa H. Fidele, MD, FAAP May-October 2000 Medical Office Newsletter
Here are a few tips to provide some relief for those painful bites -n- stings.
HUMAN & ANIMAL BITES Wash bite area with soap and water. For minor bites, keep clean and covered with an antibiotic ointment till healed. For moderate - severe bites, call Dr. Fidele's office or go to your nearest emergency room for further cleaning and medical care. Prophylactic oral antibiotics may also be necessary.
MOSQUITO BITES Apply anti-itch lotion (e.g., Aveeno, Benadryl) or a baking soda paste (mix baking soda with water to form a paste). Hydrocortisone 0.5-1.0% 3-times a day is helpful.
For prevention, DEET (a short name for a long chemical compound) is most effective. Do not use more than 10% DEET on kids and avoid use on infants under 12-months of age. Other repellants containing permethrin can also be effective. If you're looking for "alternatives", Soybean oil is also known to repel mosquitoes for up to 3-4 hours if you can handle the oily feeling. Another alternative is Citronella which has been effective for some. Wear neutral colors. Mosquitos are attracted to bright colors. Avoid scented lotions or colognes.
Before using insect repellents, apply on a small portion of the skin first to test for any adverse reactions. And do not apply repellent to Baby's hands -- they are likely to touch their eyes or mouth.
OTHER ITCHY BITES (Fleas, Mites) Apply anti-itch lotion (e.g., Aveeno, Benadryl) or a baking soda paste (mix baking soda with water to form a paste). Hydrocortisone 0.5-1.0% 3-times a day is helpful.
PAINFUL BITES (Ants / Bees / Centipedes / Wasps) Rub meat tenderizer paste (mix meat tenderizer with water to form a paste) onto area and leave it there for 15-minutes. Use ice if tenderizer is not available.
JELLY FISH . PORTUGUESE MAN-O-WAR STINGS Gently remove tentacles and wash area with salt water only. Then apply vinegar or baking soda paste onto affected areas. Hydrocortisone 0.5-1.0% 3-times a day can help the redness or swelling that persists. Use acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) or ibuprofen (e.g., Advil, Motrin) for pain control.
Fresh water, alcohol, ammonia, urine, bleach or rubbing with sand will make it worse by releasing more venom.
RASHES WHILE SWIMMING There are various causes many of which can be managed with hydrocortisone 0.5-1.0% 3-times a day. Benadryl is also helpful for the itch..
SEA URCHIN . CORAL CUTS Remove spines or fragments and clean, if possible, with an equal mixture of hot water and vinegar. Caution: Water should not be too hot.
Acetaminophen can be used for painful bites and stings.
Any increasing redness, pain, swelling or drainage may be signs of an infection and should be seen by Dr. Fidele as soon as possible. Patients with severe allergic reactions (hives or breathing problems) should call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Room.
